Nemo Saori Wall / Ceiling Lamp

Designed by Kazuhide Takahama in 1973, the Nemo Saori wall and ceiling lamp stands as one of the earliest examples of lighting conceived as a true architectural element. Its white painted steel structure supports a stretch fabric diffuser, mounted on-point so the square form reads as a diamond against the wall or ceiling, giving the piece a quiet, sculptural presence in any interior.

The diffuser is crafted from 100% polyester stretch fabric, drawn taut over the frame and shaped by a single soft fold that catches the light and lends the flat surface a subtle sense of depth. Light is fully diffused throughout the fabric, so the lamp glows evenly rather than casting a directional beam — it reads as a luminous surface rather than a conventional fixture.

Saori comes in two sizes. The Q1 measures 62 x 62 x 22 cm and takes a single E27 bulb of up to 75W; the Q2 measures 100 x 100 x 30 cm and takes two E27 bulbs of up to 75W each. Both run on 230V, carry an IP20 rating for indoor use, and are dimmable when fitted with dimmable bulbs. The fabric diffuser can be removed and washed at 30 degrees, allowing the lamp to stay as clean and precise as its original design.

Saori belongs to a family of designs by Takahama inspired by traditional Eastern lamps, where stretched fabric replaces rice paper as the means of spreading light. Takahama named these pieces after members of his own family — Saori, Kazuki and Kaori — a personal touch behind a design of lasting architectural significance.
